Periodontal diseases are common in both developed and developing countries, affecting approximately 20-50% of the global population. Poor oral hygiene, smoking, and diabetes are major risk factors for periodontal diseases. "Gingivitis" is the early stage of gum disease. At this stage, the gums bleed, and the disease is limited to the gums. If left untreated, the disease progresses deeper into the tissues, reaching the alveolar bone that supports the teeth, and is then referred to as "Periodontitis." Over time, due to the loss of surrounding supporting tissues, the tooth may begin to loosen. This condition can also occur around dental implants. In the stage of "peri-implant mucositis," there is involvement of the soft tissues around the implant, while "peri-implantitis" refers to the stage where the bone tissue around the implant is lost. The preservation of the health of the hard and soft tissues supporting the teeth and dental implants, as well as the treatment of their diseases, fall under the scope of Periodontology. In this context, the treatment of lost supporting tissues due to diseases around the teeth and implants is performed using the principles of "Guided Tissue Regeneration" to regenerate the tissues. Additionally, deficiencies in both hard and soft tissues can also be corrected through the treatments provided.
"Gum recessions" are also common issues encountered in the population. Exposed root surfaces can lead to problems such as sensitivity, pain, and aesthetic concerns. These recessions can be treated using Periodontal Plastic Surgery techniques. Additionally, the use of autologous blood products (PRF), gum aesthetics (pink aesthetics), implantology, peri-implant diseases, LASER, and the relationship between systemic conditions and periodontal health are also within the scope of our department's focus.
In addition to these, our department participates in efforts to protect the oral and dental health of the community. As part of the "Pre-graduation education" program, we conduct theoretical and practical courses on "Dentistry" and "Specialization in Dentistry," with a specific focus on "Periodontology Specialization Training."
